Was denkt ihr, waren die beiden Werkzeuge jeweils an einem Ende gegenüberliegend (à la Doppelaxt) oder an beiden Enden angebracht? The invention of a double-ended implement to carry out two different tasks within the same process. Good examples are to be seen in the axe/adze, and a near relative belonging to the same family, the pick/mattock. In clearing woodland or bush the woodsman needs an axe to chop away roots, and an adze to claw out the stumps. In digging trenches the sharp pick breaks the surface, while the broad-bladed mattook bites into the less compacted earth below surface level. Double-ended implements are first noticed on Roman sites, and may be of Roman invention.
